Design Observer Magazine

Design Observer is an online magazine that focuses on topics in graphic design, print, and the world around us. I created a print version of the magazine with a rebranded identity. This issue's main feature article, New Fuel for an Old Narrative, focuses on the BP Oil Spill and is one of the key elements in my design. I painted ink spreads, mimicking how the oil, Hurricane Katrina, and decades of gentrification lay over Louisiana like a thick smog, and based the type grid on where those spreads of ink lay. This work was part of a class.

Design Observer iPad App

After the initial design of the Design Observer print magazine, I then designed a version to be used on the iPad. The user can scroll vertically and see all of the ink spreads connecting to one another. The user can highlight text, select it, and share it through their social media networks. They can also browse through past issues, or save certain pages that they want to look back on later. This work was part of a class.

Bank Street Schools

The Bank Street School is a holistic school in New York City. I designed a hypothetical promotional book for the school. The book would consist of a containing folder that holds all of the components. The inside two books are an informational book and a book of student profiles. The school focuses on the exploration of children and how it teaches them about the world around them. Thus, I separated the book into sections. Each section is symbolized by a whimsical mode of exploration (i.e. hot air balloon, train engine, etc...). The book also include fulls spreads of student artwork with quotes from the school. This work was part of a class.

AFFCTN

AFFCTN is a series of embroidered love messages of the modern age. The works focus on how our language has changed due to texting and the web. Human emotions, such as love, are now conveyed through kitschy text-speak. The series is a satire on modern affection, and juxtaposes the transience of technology with the permanence of a hand-made piece. This past year I was given a student-space gallery at MICA to show these works for a month on campus.

Cityblossoms Website

Cityblossoms is a non-profit organization that helps build community gardens at low-income schools in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area, then teaches workshops yearround to show the children, faculty, and greater community how the tend to the gardens. In the summer of 2010, I redesigned their website in order to increase their visibility on the web and to give them a website that they could monitor on their own.

Carbon iPad App

Carbon is a carbon footprint tracking application for the iPad. The application helps the user figure out what their carbon footprint is, then set goals to lower their footprint. It also helps direct them to green restaurants, grocery and clothing stores, salons, activities, and use green transportation methods by plotting their route. This work was part of a class.
